In addition to hindering digestion, it can cause bloating, flatulence and worsen the symptoms of certain gastrointestinal disorders. It can also facilitate the development of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, two significant risk factors for the onset of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
On the other hand, eating very fast makes you eat more food than you really need. This happens because the brain takes an average of 20 minutes to repair that you are satisfied. Therefore, it is advisable to eat slowly, savoring each bite, which allows you to fill it with less quantity .
In reference to the latter, the researcher from the University of Hiroshima (Japan), Dr. Takayuki Yamaji, said: “Eating slowly is crucial to prevent metabolic diseases. When eating fast, a person does not feel full until it has been exceeded, causing a greater fluctuation of glucose. This can lead to insulin resistance. ”
Research led by Yamaji examined 642 men and 441 women with an average age of 51.2 years in good health. For five years they were monitored for weight and other physiological parameters. The participants were divided into three groups: fast, normal or slow eaters.
At the end of the study, it was concluded that among the fastest eaters the incidence of the metabolic syndrome was 11.6 %, compared to 6.5% for normal eaters and 2.3% for leisurely eaters. Eating fast was also associated with higher weight gain, increased abdominal fat accumulation and hyperglycemia.
Those who eat too fast have increased anxiety levels, and their heart rate is also faster than usual. Eating slowly and chewing correctly are rare habits, but extremely important so it is good to start trying to put them into practice now to remain healthy throughout life.
